Concrete Design

Different construction projects will require concrete mixes of different strength ratings. For example, the foundations of a large industrial structure will demand much stronger concrete than the base for a domestic driveway. That’s where concrete design comes into play.

Concrete mix design involves adjusting the proportions and mix of concrete through rigorous testing and calculations to ensure it is suitable for a project. All design mix concrete is given a grade that indicates the minimum compressive strength of a mix after 28 days when it has fully cured; the higher the grade, the stronger the concrete.

Here at South Coast Concrete, we supply an extensive range of different concrete grades to customers across Portsmouth, Southampton, Chichester and beyond, including:

  • C10: Used for non-structural elements, like pathways and patios.
  • C15: For use in domestic environments for projects like floor blinding, pathways, shed foundations, kerbs and more.
  • C20: Used for lightweight domestic and commercial projects, such as internal floor slabs and bases for workshops and garages.
  • C25: A multipurpose mix that is primarily used for foundations.
  • C30: Ideal for external commercial projects, such as pavements, driveways, roads and external slabs.
  • C35: A heavy-duty mix famed for its durability and commonly used for external walls and slabs, reinforced bases and agricultural storage areas.
  • C40: Commercial grade concrete that is used for heavy-duty projects such as roadworks, HGV car parks, septic tank foundations, structural beams and more.
  • C50: A specialist mix that provides exceptional compressive strength and is used in the construction of bridges and support columns, as well as in environments with harsh conditions, such as where there are high levels of abrasion and chemicals.

Engineers may then use techniques such as the working stress method, ultimate strength method and limit state method to ensure the safety and stability of the structure.
